There’s been a lot of government activity around speech, language and communication needs recently.
RCSLT and ICAN have received a cross-departmental government response to the Bercow: 10 years on report.
The government have acknowledged that although there has been a ‘significant amount of progress over the last year’ they recognise that there is ‘still more to do’ to support children with speech, language and communication needs.
Currently, 28 per cent of children finish Reception year without the expected language and communication skills, and the government are committed to halving this number by 2028.
Last month the children’s commissioner for England published a report highlighting that there is a “postcode lottery” for access to support for children with communication difficulties.
The government have just launched a new 3 year campaign “Hungry Little Minds” which aims to support early literacy and communication. Find out more here.
